When watching any type of media it’s easy for a viewer form expectations based upon the past. This can lead to an uneasy feeling when a show does not meet expectations. This isn’t so with Cross Game, a shounen that shows that a beautiful story can be found even in a story that is essentially about baseball and romance.

The main characters are all memorable in their own right including the four sisters who live on the street to Ko’s best friend Daiki. This small group of characters makes the show special. They are able to add an element of personality and atmosphere to every scene. Their character traits allow them to tackle the themes of death and love with ease, giving them a deeper feel than you would expect from a shonen.

Cross Game is unique because it knows where to focus its attention. Although the characters are very well developed, there’s little tension or twists that happen in every episode. This gives the viewer the opportunity to enjoy the development of their relationship without being distracted by the need for emotional tension or a plot which constantly tries to surprise the viewer with new twists and suspenseful cliffhangers. The fact that it is able to avoid these issues is the reason that makes Cross Game so wonderful, and it’s something that the genre could benefit from more of.
